Your School Probably Already Has the Budget
Most primary schools receive between £16,000 and £50,000 per year through the PE & Sport Premium alone — and outdoor shelters qualify. We help schools identify the right funding and provide quotes in whatever format your finance team needs.
Funding Sources That Cover Outdoor Shelters
Schools don't need to find new money. These existing funding streams already cover gazebos, canopies and outdoor classrooms.
PE & Sport Premium
Every state-funded primary school in England receives this annual grant specifically for improving PE and physical activity. Outdoor shelters — gazebos, canopies, covered play areas — qualify because they enable year-round outdoor physical activity, sport and active play.
- Allocated directly to primary schools each academic year
- Can be used for capital projects that promote physical activity
- Outdoor shelters enable PE, active play and lunchtime sport in all weather
- Schools must report how they spend it — a shelter is a clear, auditable use
School Condition Allocation (SCA)
Multi-academy trusts and large academies receive SCA funding for maintaining and improving their buildings and grounds. Outdoor structures that improve the school environment — canopies, sheltered dining areas, outdoor classrooms — can be funded through SCA.
- Available to academy trusts with 5+ schools and large single academies
- Covers improvement and maintenance of school grounds
- Outdoor shelters improve site condition and usability
- One relationship with a trust estates lead can unlock multiple projects
Community & Charitable Grants
Hundreds of grant-awarding bodies fund school improvement projects. Many prioritise outdoor learning, environmental sustainability and student wellbeing — which maps directly onto gazebos, canopies and outdoor classrooms.
- Local community foundations often fund school outdoor projects
- National charities support outdoor learning and play initiatives
- Grants often prioritise sustainability, wellbeing and outdoor access
- We can provide quotes and project descriptions to support your application
PTA & Fundraising
Parent-teacher associations regularly fund visible, lasting improvements that benefit the whole school. A timber gazebo or outdoor classroom is exactly the kind of project that rallies community support — it's tangible, photogenic and used every day.
- High-visibility project that parents and governors get behind
- Can be combined with other funding sources to cover the full cost
- We provide clear quotes and visuals to help your fundraising case
- Naming or dedication plaques available on request
Devolved Formula Capital (DFC)
Maintained schools receive a small annual capital grant for buildings and grounds improvements. While modest on its own, DFC can be combined with Sport Premium or PTA funds to cover a shelter project.
- Annual capital allocation for maintained schools
- Can be accumulated over 2–3 years for larger projects
- Combines well with Sport Premium or fundraising
- Straightforward to allocate — no separate application needed
